Resolutions? Try this instead!

January 21, 2021

It’s a new year and that means New Year’s Resolutions. While I enjoy the idea of setting goals for the new year, I dislike the specificity of normal resolutions. I feel it sets you up for failure and normally quick failure. Instead, I suggest taking a broader approach.

Rather than something specific like “working out every day” or very limited like “start a new hobby”, I prefer to set an overall theme like “Be more honest” or “live life more freely”. I like this method because it gives you a guiding principle for the year. Rather than a laundry list of jobs to tick off, you have a guiderail for making decisions throughout the year.

This isn’t an approach everyone will like, but if you’re looking for something new give this theme-based approach to New Year’s Resolutions. At worst there’s nothing lost and at best you’ll have a year well lived!
